pd FATBIKE

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What makes pd Fatbikes so great?

Fat bikes are incredibly popular because they offer a smooth, comfortable, and completely carefree riding experience in all conditions. The extra-wide tires effortlessly absorb shocks and provide excellent traction on any terrain. Unlike conventional e-bikes, fat bikes are designed to easily handle the daily commute, comfortably carry luggage, and offer fun and dynamic riding for weekend excursions.

  • Does the size fit my height?

Our fat bikes are equipped with a robust and durable frame and are designed to carry a total load of up to 150 kg, including rider and passenger.

For optimal comfort and best performance, riders between 160 cm and 190 cm will feel most comfortable on our models with 20-inch tires, while riders between 140 cm and 170 cm can choose our compact versions with 16-inch tires.

Whether smaller or larger, lighter or stronger – as long as you are within these ranges, you will enjoy a comfortable, safe and perfectly balanced ride.

  • Where can I buy your PD Fatbikes?

We sell our entire range of fat bikes online in Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Fully assembled, ready to ride, and with free shipping!

  • Are fat bikes legal in Switzerland?

All pd Fatbikes are fully street legal in Switzerland and, according to Article 18 of the VTS (Ordinance on the Technical Requirements for Road Vehicles, SR 741.41), fall under the category of "light motorized bicycles". Their motor assistance is limited to 25 km/h and a maximum rated power of 500 W, placing them in the same category as standard bicycles.

This means that neither registration, license plates, nor a driver's license are required (from age 14 with category M, from age 16 without a license). Fatbikes can be used freely on public roads and designated cycle paths throughout Switzerland and offer a straightforward and trouble-free riding experience.

  • Can I take a test drive?

Absolutely! Our partner dealers are happy to offer you free test rides so you can experience our fat bikes for yourself. You can find a complete list of authorized partners here.

Fat bikes are more than just bicycles – they represent a completely new riding experience. Experience the incredible traction, unparalleled comfort, and powerful, fun performance before you decide.

  • Do I have to pedal to be able to ride?

Our fat bikes are equipped with a half-throttle that allows you to reach speeds of up to 25 km/h without pedaling. In pedal-assist mode, a sensor detects your movement and smoothly engages the rear hub motor to provide additional support.

Thanks to this system, riding a fat bike requires very little physical effort – but if you pedal whenever possible, this will help conserve battery power and increase your range.

Setup and maintenance

  • How often should I have my fat bike serviced?

We recommend having your fat bike serviced every 6 months or after approximately 600 km – whichever comes first. A complete list of our authorized service and repair partners can be found here.

In addition to regular maintenance by a professional, it is important to carry out simple checks at home to keep your fat bike in top condition:

Clean and lubricate the chain regularly.

    Check tire pressure

    Check brake pads for wear

Make sure the axle nuts are tightened securely (recommended torque: approx. 45 Nm).

Check cables and electrical connectors for dirt, moisture, or damage.

Tighten the screws on the handlebars, stem and saddle.

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance, longer lifespan and a safe driving experience.

  • What is the optimal tire pressure for my fat bike?

For optimal grip, comfort and maximum battery performance of your fat bike, we recommend the following tire pressure settings:

    General driving behavior: 1.5 – 2.0 bar

Snow and loose ground: approximately 1.5 bar

Roads and paved surfaces: up to 2.0 bar

Lower tire pressure provides better traction and a smoother ride, while higher pressure improves efficiency and increases battery range.

  • How do I clean my fat bike?

Do not immerse your fat bike in water. Instead, clean it with a damp cloth or a soft brush – never use a pressure washer.

Remove dirt and grease from the chain with a suitable degreaser, e.g. WD-40.

After cleaning, a suitable chain lubricant should be applied to ensure smooth operation and a long service life.

Brake discs and brake pads must never be coated with grease or lubricant, as this can significantly impair braking performance.

  • What if I need spare parts?

pd Fatbike strives to keep the most common spare parts for all models in stock to ensure quick repairs. Many parts can be ordered directly from our webshop or obtained from one of our service partners. For repair or service needs, please contact one of our pd Fatbike service partners or send us an email.

  • When should I change my tires?

Worn tire treads increase the risk of tire punctures and sidewall damage.

On average, fat bike tires last between 2,000 and 4,000 km, depending on the riding conditions, the terrain and the individual riding style.

Battery & Electronics

  • What is the range of my fat bike?

The range of a fat bike depends on various factors, including the terrain, the outside temperature, the rider's weight, the level of assistance, whether one relies more on the throttle or actively pedals, and the general condition of the battery.

  • What is the best way to store my battery?

If your fat bike is not going to be used for an extended period of time, you can maintain battery performance and extend its lifespan by following a few simple guidelines:

Store the bicycle indoors at room temperature.

Keep the battery charged between 60% and 80%, which is approximately 48V to 51V (54V when fully charged).

Avoid contact with frost or very low temperatures.

Suitable storage conditions help to maintain the battery's performance and avoid long-term damage.

  • How do fat bikes with two batteries work?

Our dual-battery models are designed to offer a greater range and are equipped with an intelligent battery management system (BMS) that regulates and optimizes the power consumption of both batteries.

Riders can choose to operate the bicycle with a single battery or with both simultaneously. Using the batteries sequentially offers a practical advantage: reserve capacity is always available, as the second battery is simply activated as soon as the first one is empty.

If both batteries are activated simultaneously, the battery management system (BMS) automatically draws energy first from the battery with the higher state of charge. This prevents one battery from being completely discharged while the other remains only partially charged, ensuring balanced and efficient energy use.

When charging, it is important to charge the batteries one after the other, as connecting the charger to one battery will not automatically charge the second. This extends the lifespan of the batteries and improves charging efficiency.

For drivers who prefer shorter charging times, an optional auxiliary charger can be a practical solution.

Fehlerbehebung

  • My bicycle won't start.

Make sure the battery switches are in the "On" position and that both batteries are sufficiently charged.

Check that the batteries are inserted correctly and securely in their holders.

Make sure the fatbike's display is unlocked – if you are using an NFC key, check that it is working properly.

Make sure the main switch on the left side of the bicycle is turned on and working properly.

  • The lights aren't working.

If your fat bike is switched on (the display is lit), but the front and rear lights do not turn on when you press the light switch, follow these steps:

Turn the fat bike off completely.

Set the battery switches to “OFF”.

    Wait about a minute.

Then switch the batteries back to "ON" and turn the bicycle back on.

This simple reset can often resolve temporary problems with the lighting system.

  • The pedal assist mode is not working.

If the motor doesn't start when you pedal, the pedal sensor may be faulty or damaged. First, check that all connectors attached to the pedal sensor are securely fastened.

If the sensor is clogged with dirt, mud or deposits, clean it carefully with a soft brush or a damp cloth.

Cleaning and correctly connecting the pedal sensor ensures smooth motor support and reliable performance.

Warranty & Support

  • What type of warranty do you offer?

The full warranty terms and conditions are set out in pd FATBIKE's General Terms and Conditions, which are subject to change without notice. In some cases, special warranty agreements may apply to specific models or customers; these can be agreed upon separately in writing between Molenstraat and the customer.

    Warranty scope:

    Frame and components: 2 years

Battery and electronic parts: 1 year

Parts that are subject to normal wear and tear – such as tires, brake pads, chains and similar components – are excluded from the warranty.

The warranty may be voided in the event of excessive water damage, visible signs of accidents or falls, or improper use of the fat bike.

Our team will be happy to assist you and, if the problem is covered by the warranty, arrange for a repair or replacement. If necessary, we can also put you in touch with one of our authorized service partners.
